What Your Tire Sizes Mean

It may be time to change your tires, and you're looking at all the letters and numbers on the tires and can't make heads or tails of it. The numbers and letters on the tires have an important meaning, and you want to make sure you get the right replacement tires.

For example, let's say your tire is 235/75R15. What does this mean? The 235 is the width of the tire in millimeters from sidewall to sidewall. The 75 is an expression of the ratio of the height of the sidewall to its width. In other words, the sidewall's height is 75 percent of its width. The R signifies that it is a radial tire. The 15 means that the tire fits a 15 inch wheel.
